When the Holiday Becomes a Burden

We all know the drill: before a holiday can begin, there’s much to be done. Last-minute tasks at work need to be completed, bags packed, travel documents organised, and pets cared for, just to name a few. Even during the trip itself, many people struggle to truly relax. Perhaps you are one of those who, despite their best intentions, keep checking emails, worrying about ongoing projects, or mentally planning your return to work. Instead of unwinding, your mind is consumed by unfinished tasks and upcoming challenges. You’re not alone: Many of us struggle to let go of our constant availability and leave daily routines behind.

Then, there’s the return to work and daily life post-vacation. Often, a nagging feeling sets in during the final days of the trip. The thought of a full inbox, numerous meetings, and countless tasks waiting for you can be overwhelming. Fortunately, there are ways to make your holiday stress-free and transition smoothly back into daily life. Here’s how:

Stress-Free Planning: Preparing for Your Holiday

A relaxed holiday starts with careful planning. Here are five tips to help you prepare for your trip:

1. Create Planning Lists

Make a list of all the tasks that need to be completed before you leave. This includes work projects and personal matters like arranging pet care or preparing your home. Be realistic! Trying to finish everything at the last minute to start your holiday relaxed and return to an organised home often only creates more stress

Also start planning your departure times, choice of transportation, and check-in times well in advance. Note these details on your smartphone or a piece of paper for easy reference. This will help clear your mind so you can focus on what matters: your holiday.

2. Delegate Tasks

Discuss with your colleagues early on which tasks need to be handled during your absence, and delegate responsibilities if necessary. This way, you can ensure that important projects don’t stall, and you don’t have to worry about work while you’re away.

3. Plan Together

If you’re travelling with family or friends, approach the preparations together and support each other in planning. Everyone can take on a part of the responsibility, reducing stress for all involved. Also, clarify expectations beforehand to avoid conflicts or disappointments. Discuss with your fellow travellers what you expect from the trip and who will handle which tasks, such as organising day trips, cooking, or taking care of children. Open communication helps prevent misunderstandings and ensures everyone is satisfied.

4. Pack Early

Start packing early to avoid last-minute stress. Create a detailed packing list and check that you have everything you need. Remember to bring important travel documents, medications, and personal items. A checklist stored on your smartphone can also help with future trips.

5. Plan Your Return

Even though you might not want to think about your return before your trip, it’s wise to prepare, as the transition back to daily life can be challenging. Make a list of the current status of all your work projects and the next steps to take after you return. A clear overview will ease the transition and help prevent feeling overwhelmed. Also, plan the first day back without too many meetings or urgent tasks to gently ease back into your work routine.

During the Holiday: Relaxation and Enjoyment

Even when you’ve reached your holiday destination, it can be challenging to switch off due to ingrained routines and internal pressure. We often feel the need to stay connected and productive, forgetting the importance of relaxation and taking a break. Here are five strategies to help you unwind and truly make the most of your time off:

1. Digital Breaks

Take conscious digital breaks during your vacation. Turn off notifications on your smartphone or, better yet, delete your email app altogether. If checking emails or social media is unavoidable, limit it to set times. This helps create a boundary between work and relaxation.

2. Mindfulness

Practising mindfulness can also help you find calm during your holiday. Try to live in the moment as much as possible and appreciate the small things, whether it’s a walk on the beach, a leisurely breakfast on the terrace, or reading a good book. By focusing on the here and now, you can leave everyday worries behind and recharge. If you’re new to mindfulness, check out my blog post, “A Beginners Guide to Mindfulness.”

3. Personal Space

Holidays are often seen as time that must be spent entirely with travel companions, but creating personal space and engaging in activities that bring you joy is just as important. Don’t hesitate to step away from the group or your family and pursue your own interests. If your companions prefer lounging on the beach, and you’d rather explore the area, go ahead!

4. New Experiences

New experiences can also help clear your mind. Take the opportunity to try activities you might not do in your daily life. Whether it’s a yoga class, a hike in unfamiliar terrain, or a cooking course, new experiences can enrich your holiday and help you break away from routines. Plan activities that help you relax and reduce stress.

5. Flexibility

Finally, I encourage you to leave room for spontaneous decisions and unexpected events, as overly strict planning often only causes additional stress. Be open to changing plans and ready to adapt if things don’t go as expected. Sometimes, unplanned events lead to the most memorable or enjoyable experiences. By staying flexible and adapting, you can reduce stress and still enjoy your holiday.

Ultimately, it’s about making your holiday work for you. A mindful and well-planned break can work wonders for your relaxation. By consciously preparing, practising mindfulness, and planning your return well, you can fully enjoy your holiday and return refreshed.

Bonus Tip: Try never to end your holiday without already planning the next one! Anticipating the next holiday can make the return to routine much easier, as it gives you something to look forward to during the last days of your trip and helps minimise stress when transitioning back into work life.

I wish you a wonderful and relaxing holiday – enjoy this time off and leave the everyday stress behind!
